For nearly two decades, Arkansas Medicaid has embraced the concept of pay-for-performance as a key approach to improving quality of care in Arkansas. This concept entails rewarding hospitals with financial incentives to achieve Medicaid quality goals. Through a partnership between Arkansas Medicaid, the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care (AFMC), and the Arkansas Hospital Association (AHA), the Inpatient Quality Incentive (IQI) program was developed in 2006 to assess quality of care by assessing the most effective ways hospitals provide medical care to their patients. Arkansas Medicaid recognizes participants' dedication to consistent participation in the IQI program and for their vigilance in improving health care and patient outcomes in Arkansas.
