What is Medicaid?

Back to the Welcome Packet

Medicaid is a type of health insurance. It helps low-income Arkansans pay for hospital stays, doctor visits, medicines, and more. The state and federal governments help pay for these services. If you qualify, Medicaid can help you stay healthy and get care when you need it.

Here's why it's so important.

Medicaid helps pay for:

  • Doctor visits
  • Hospital care
  • Shots and check-ups
  • Medicine

It also helps you stay healthy by:

  • Catching problems early so they don't get worse
  • Helping you take care of your long-term health problems like asthma or diabetes.

It helps keep you from paying too much for care:

  • You pay less for things like doctor's visits and medicine.
  • It helps you avoid big medical bills.

It helps moms and kids by:

  • Paying for care before and after a baby is born
  • Helping kids get shots, dentist visits, and check-ups

It helps people who are older or have disabilities by:

  • Paying for help at home or in a nursing home
  • Helping people live on their own with some support

It also helps with mental health by:

  • Paying for therapy and treatment for things like depression or addiction.
