Welcome to the first issue of AFMC’s ReviewNews. We hope it will be a helpful and informative quarterly communication with our external physician reviewers. We are thankful for your expertise and value the time you have provided to AFMC over the years.
The goal of this newsletter is to help build a better relationship with you and to improve your engagement with the review process. We want to provide you a “quick-read” of useful information to help you improve your reviews. We also hope this eblast will encourage you to make suggestions about how we at AFMC can be more helpful to you in your review work.
Improving your reviews
I invited Dr. Tom Tinsman, our Associate Medical Director and lead physician in AFMC’s Fort Smith office, to write a quarterly column on ways to improve your reviews, including examples of good reviews and suggestions for making reviews more comprehensive. Dr. Tinsman has been with AFMC for more than 20 years, providing a level of experience that is highly valued by AFMC. AFMC has been doing review work for more than 45 years. There have been many changes and technology has helped us improve the processes for performing reviews with enhanced security and speed. We made big changes to our review platform last year by launching AFMC ReviewPoint. This portal was developed by our in-house IT staff based on a Salesforce platform. It has greatly improved efficiencies and helped control costs. We are working to transition all reviewers to this portal in the next few weeks. We hope it will be a useful and intuitive tool for you as an external reviewer. We welcome any feedback (good or bad). Our IT staff is available 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays to provide technical support. Call the help desk at 479-573-7777 or use the contact form.
Timeliness is crucial
Our contracts to perform reviews with public and private health plans include strict timelines (usually less than two weeks) to complete the review. As these contracts become more and more competitive, we must assure timeliness and adhere to contractually binding, specified turn-around times. As a physician reviewer, you can help us by returning your reviews as quickly as possible. Please let us know when it is or is not a good time for you to conduct a review. If a review has been issued to you and something has changed with your time schedule, we can re-assign to another reviewer and still meet our deadline. Without meeting these deadlines, we run the risk not meeting those contractual deadlines.
Refer a colleague
As a reviewer, you know there is always plenty of review work. AFMC performs a large variety of reviews sometimes requiring specialists’ expertise. We need your help to recruit your colleagues to become AFMC reviewers. If you know of someone, email Sally Johnson at Sjohnson@afmc.org or refer them to our AFMC website.
Associate Medical Director positions open
If you have enjoyed doing reviews externally but are looking for something different from full-time clinical practice, AFMC has open positions for the Associate Medical Director position in Fort Smith and Associate Medical Director in Little Rock. We need physicians “in-house” to perform multiple types of reviews and prior authorizations, as well as assist with development and implementation of other projects associated with review work.
