Welcome to your second edition of AFMC’s ReviewNews. We had a great response to last month’s issue. We plan to continue sending these to you quarterly with beneficial information to help you as a Physician Advisor doing reviews. Your input is certainly welcome.
The most opened topic from last month’s newsletter was Dr. Tinsman’s column, “How to Write Better Review Rationales.” This month, Dr. Tinsman brings you more pearls of review wisdom about observation status admissions.
AFMC has launched the process of transitioning all our external reviewers to a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) to access the AFMC ReviewPoint PA Portal. VDI allows you to have a secure connection using your personal computer. AFMC’s IT department has worked hard to make this a smooth transition. They are providing you with training instructions and one-on-one support, as needed. You should have recently received a survey to help us know when our physician advisors typically perform reviews during the week and weekends. As a result of the survey, we will be offering some after-hours support in the evenings and on weekends to meet your review needs. Our review staff is always available during regular office hours to help with routine and more complex issues.
AFMC has just completed a successful recruitment campaign to increase our number of external physician reviewers. A mailing was sent to Arkansas licensed physicians in targeted specialties. You may have also seen our advertisements in the Healthcare Journal of Little Rock, the AAFP’s Arkansas Family Physician and the Arkansas Medical Society’s The Journal.
Having a wider variety of specialties among our physician reviewers creates a stronger network and resource for AFMC. It ensures that Arkansas licensed physicians are reviewing Arkansas physicians. It will also help us reduce the large volume of reviews that a few of our physician reviewers have graciously accepted to be sure AFMC meets its timeliness and contractual requirements for the completion of initial reviews and reconsiderations.
Thank you for your hard work and the timely return of reviews. The work you do for the patients of Arkansas, both in and out of your practice time, is highly valued by AFMC.
